We have 6 new Student Ambassadors who have just taken on the responsibility of taking Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders from the cafeteria back to their classrooms starting at 8:15AM every morning. For 15-20 minutes, these 5th graders will walk up and down stairs as they guide the younger students down to their classrooms and set a positive example of hallway behavior. These students practiced for 2-3 days last week and shadowed the last Student Ambassadors as they learned the different classrooms and how to most effectively lead the students back to their classrooms. Today was their first solo experience and I believe everything went smoothly, and I am so proud of each and every one of them. They will be Student Ambassadors for these 9 weeks, and I can't wait to see them grow into their responsibilities and continue to positively interact with the younger students.
I am so excited about teaming up with Communities in School (CIS) to create a new program here at Washington-Lee: Bearcat Buddies! The Student Ambassadors from the first 9 weeks of school are moving into a new position where they meet with Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders for 15 minutes every morning and eat breakfast, read books, and have some chit-chat time! The 5th grade students set great examples of what a successful student looks like and can be a positive influence to the younger students by meeting with them 3 times a week for 3 weeks. For the first 3 weeks, the Bearcat Buddies will be with Kindergarten students; the second 3 weeks will be with 1st Grade, and the final 3 weeks before Christmas will be with 2nd Grade.

October is Bullying Awareness Month!! In Guidance Class, we are discussing what bullying behavior looks like, the consequences of bullying behavior, and how to appropriately respond to a bully. At Washington-Lee, we do not tolerate bullying behavior in any shape or form, and we want all our students to feel safe and loved when they are here at school.
As a fun, unifying experience, we would like to invite your child to participate in our Spirit Week at the end of the month. Each day of the week will have a different theme that goes along with the way we will dress for that day. Please make sure that the clothing your child decides to wear for each day does not distract themselves or others from learning. I sent home a letter last week (or the week before), but below are each days theme, just as a reminder!! Monday, October 26: Mismatched Clothing; We Are All Unique Wear mismatched clothing Tuesday, October 27: Hats and Funky Socks; Bully Free from Head to Toe Wear hats and funky socks Wednesday, October 28: Classroom Colors; Our Class is a Team Your class will choose a color to wear so everyone in your class matches Thursday, October 29: Superhero Day; You Can Be a HERO Wear a superhero shirt (not an entire outfit, no masks) Friday, October 30: Bearcat Shirt; Our School Stands Against Bullying Wear your bearcat shirt or sweatshirt |
