With K-2, we are learning about different career options in general, as well as the difference between a job and career. I gave the example of how I worked at Mister Donut, a cafe in Japan, for 2 years in high school; that was a job. I worked as a server at Cracker Barrel for 2 years in college, as well as a substitute teacher in graduate school for 1 year, and those were both jobs as well. Now, as a school counselor, I plan to stay in this position for a long time; this is my career. A job is usually short term, and a career is usually long-term.
With 3-5 we also learned about different career options, but I had 5th graders use <vacareerview.org/> to actually research 4 different jobs according to their interests. They seemed to enjoy finding the different options available according to the subjects they enjoyed in school, hobbies they have for their free time, and general interests. When they finished, they explored Career Town and played career games until class was over. I was excited to get them interested in careers and research.
Next week will be our last week of Careers before Spring Break. We will be doing test prep lessons for upper grades and health and self-care for lower grades.
I am so excited for Spring Break coming up next Friday. It has been a long stretch of school without breaks, and I am sure students and families all are looking forward to this time away from academics.
I hope that everyone has a wonderful Spring Break!!
